The goal of the project is to do away with the expensive and time consuming process of fitting lower extremity prosthetics that are used in Third World and developing nations. The current fitting process that is used in the United States is very complicated and requires special training. Typically a certified professional prosthetists would take a negative mold of the limb, then take a positive cast of the limb, after that they would create a 3-D rendering of the limb using a scanner and finally the prosthetists would send the rendering off to be fabricated. The process saves time and money, while still using parts that are currently stored or discarded after a patient no longer needs the device. The process creates a means for using discarded prosthetic devises in under ten minutes. The mock-up consists of a rigid container with an attached silicone liner. The patient simply places his or her limb in the liner and fills the void between the rigid container and liner with a semi-rigid, and fast setting liquid materiel. Once the materiel has set, then the recycled prosthetic parts would be attached to the rigid container. The only tools that the recipient would need that aren't included in the kit would be a means of cutting light weight aluminum tubing and an allen wrench set. Currently there are thousands of prosthetic devices that are being stored that could be helping people around the world. There are an estimated 30 million people worldwide that are in need of prosthetics devices and cannot afford them.
The next step to finalizing the invention is to find a low cost means for producing the rigid container in standard sizes and working with local groups to collect the used prosthetics devices that are not currently being used.
We are Catlin Gabel's Team Delta and we are 8th graders at Catlin Gabel School located in Portland, Oregon. Most of our team members have been competing in FLL since we where in 6th grade. This year we competed at the Oregon State Finals, we all had fun during the competitions and the time leading up to it. We wish to try to develop the project further and along that path a Provisional Patent has been applied for.
